Right Here
When I became an adult,
My parents told me to spread my wings and fly.
They encouraged me to discover new places and new people.
They waved me off at airports,
And read my worldly updates, sent from tiny internet cafes around the globe.
And shrugged their shoulders when others asked,
“…but aren’t you worried that she’ll fly too high, or too far, or too fast??”
Because they trusted me.
And they trusted the wings
That I had spent my childhood and adolescence growing into.
I shared most of the highs - and the lows - of my adventures with my parents
(…and maybe kept a few things close that parents just don’t need to know!)
I sewed patches on backpacks,
And dog-eared Lonely Planet guides,
And bought souvenirs.
I lived like a local,
And learned new languages,
And collected memories and moments for my future self.
For years, I felt a bit like a feather in the breeze.
Just waiting for the next gust of wind
To pick me up and carry me to my next destination.
Always excited for the next adventure…
But also grateful for a rest
Whenever the wind died down.
I flew in and out of countries and cities and jobs.
Some adventures were smooth sailing,
While others were full of turbulence and personal strife.
My parents were there for me through all of it.
Whether with a badly-needed airport pickup,
A well-timed Zoom call,
Or an unexpected (…but greatly appreciated!) postcard or care package.
…and always making sure I had a “toothbrush and a pair of clean underwear” with me!
On one of my adventures,
I found and married my significant other,
And together, we’ve created the most beautiful little creature I’ve ever known…
I only hope that one day,
I can teach him how to spread his wings,
And be as brave as my parents always encouraged me to be.
I hope
That he will learn to soar high,
And surf that wave,
And book that flight…
But most importantly,
I hope he will always know
That his parents will be right here for him
Whenever he wants to come home.
