The Incredibly Crucial Mission of ‘Finding Your People'

Over the years, I’ve travelled here and there…
To the Far East, then the West Coast,
and eventually back East again.
Only to settle in the West, then pack back up,
And move North.

My inner compass doesn’t always
Show me the way to go home -
Because as an Expat,
The concept of ‘home’
Has been in such a constant flux.

The past 10 years of life have included
5 different ‘homes’,
And 2 different careers,
On 3 separate continents.
It’s been a bit…disorientating,
To say the least.

But the one CONSTANT of it all…

The one absolute FACTOR
And PREDICTOR of success
On this journey from here to there,
Is the incredibly crucial,
And ongoing mission
Of ‘finding my people’.

The discovery of these special people
In any given place
Is sometimes quick and unexpected.
Like ‘clicking’ with a bunch of new colleagues.

Or a serendipitous stumbling
Upon a large group gathering of
‘Like attracts like’.

And sometimes…
The ‘finding’ takes time.

More time than you hoped it would.

But it does happen.
A chance meeting. A happy accident.
A friendship ‘meet-cute’,
When you least expect it.

And before you know it,
Immediate bonds are formed…
And anything big and scary, or unknown, or unpredictable
About your newest ‘home’
Feels suddenly smaller.

More manageable.

Less worrisome.

Finding ‘your people’
Feels like discovering you are already home.

But sometimes, as we all know,
Life throws us curveballs
And things can change quickly.

Our ‘people’ move. WE move.
Life shifts, and tilts, and upends,
And we hold on for dear life through it all -
…hoping that we’ve chosen ‘our people’ well,
And that they will help us
In our NEXT transition.

Our journey continues…

And the incredibly crucial mission objective in life
Remains the same.

Your ‘people’ will become your anchor,
Wherever you are.
They will anchor you to yourself.
Remind you of what you like BEST about who you are.

They will be your biggest cheerleaders,
Your Devil’s advocates,
Your go-to travel buddies,
Your shoulders to cry on,
And the first people you want to share
Your ups and downs of life with.

They are the very best kind of ‘people’,
And you become a touchpoint for each other in life,
Wherever you are on your journey.

I’ve been lucky enough
To discover some real gems
In every corner of the Globe that I’ve travelled.
And even though some of ‘my people’
Were more difficult to find than others,

The discovery was always worth the wait.

So if you find yourself feeling lost
In some new life circumstance
(Whether here or there)…

Just remember the one absolute FACTOR
And PREDICTOR of success in life,
And begin your mission as soon as possible.
